Catch up on the full story of last weeks NEWS...........

*Noah Reece the Welshman, who had found himself returning to gaol after being found guilty of begging in November 1870, was no sooner out of gaol than he was being returned.  At the end of January 1871, after being out of gaol for only 3 weeks, he was sentenced to one calendar months hard labour.  Noah had returned to Unstone where he was found wandering around begging once again.

*The Grand Exhibition went ahead on Christmas Eve at the Assembly Rooms in the Market Hall, Chesterfield.

There was a fantastic collection of birds, fowls and rabbits the likes of which had never been seen before in Chesterfield.  The children and adults would all be awestruck at the canaries, finches, linnets, larks, thrushes, starlings and parrots.  Bantam fowls and fancy rabbits were also on display.

Also in the exhibition was a collection of stuffed birds which were offered for viewing by Mr Berrisford of Chesterfield.

The prize for the bantam category was won by Mr Hopkinson of Clay Cross and it was said that some “spirited competition” took place for this prize.  Mrs Arkwright entered her 18 month old yellow and white doe rabbit and won first prize in this category.  In fact this rabbit was said to have stolen the show and been the “theme of admiration of every visitor”.

Mr Walton exhibited a pretty crested bird, the only one of its type in the competition and deservedly won first in the class 8 category.  Mrs Arkwright again entered this time with her jonque cinnamon hen, gaining 2nd prize. The parrot class was well attended and Mr Rooth took that first prize.

The assembly rooms were decorated seasonally with evergreens and music was provided by the United Brass Band.  It is planned that if sufficient funding is raised the event will run again next year.
